Frequently Asked Questions

  • How is burstable bandwidth calculated?

Optic Fusion bills for burstable bandwidth using the industry standard 95th percentile billing method. This calculation says that 95% of the time, your usage is at or below this amount. The 95th percentile is useful because it removes unusual or infrequent traffic spikes. This allows access to much higher bandwidth speeds for short periods of time, without having to pay for them unless usage is sustained.

  • How is the "95th Percentile" calculated?

Counters on network devices are read every minute. The total number of bytes transferred (in and out) is determined each time the counters are read. The higher of these two numbers (either inbound or outbound traffic), divided by the time period (in seconds) results in a single bps (bits per second) transfer measurement.

Each measurement is stored in a database. At the end of each billing cycle, the measurements are sorted in decreasing order. The top 5% of these measurements are thrown out. The next highest bps measurement is the "95th percentile", and that's the rate for that billing cycle.

  • What are Optic Fusion's time servers?

Optic Fusion provides an NTP server with a Stratum 1 clock time.tac.opticfusion.net

  • Why have I received a spam complaint for email I did not send?

Most of the time this is because an IP address assigned to you is resolving to a name advertised in the spam. This is commonly referred to as "spamvertising" and is considered the equivalent to actually sending the spam. This must be responded to under the same guidelines as directly sent spam.

  • How can I request new or additional IP address space?
  • Does Optic Fusion provide IPv6 support?

Yes. Optic Fusion provides native dual stack IPv6 to customers. Click here to request IPv6.

  • What justifies IP address space and what must I provide to request additional space?

Per ARIN's guidelines, generally one IP address per physical host, plus 1 per SSL certificate. Additional requests require detailed technical justification.

Request for additional IP address space here for IPv4 and IPv6.

  • How much will IP address space cost me?

Nothing. Optic Fusion provides justifiable IP address space (up to a /25) at no additional charge.

  • Where can I submit Reverse DNS Requests?

Reverse DNS requests may be submitted here. Simply fill in the requested contact information and submit your request.

  • How long does DNS propagation take?

Once your DNS change has been processed, typically allow 30 to 60 minutes for your request to propagate.

  • How secure is our location?

Very. There is 24x7 manned security, as well as video surveillance and recording. Cardkeys provide access control and logging. There are at least 5 levels of security for every customer.

  • What is the turnaround time to get my equipment connected to your network?

Depending on the amount of equipment you bring in, you can be up and running in under 1 hour.

  • Is your facility carrier neutral?

Yes. We have a number of carriers in our center and can provide cross connects from any of them to your enclosure. We also offer free space to carriers to better serve our customers.

  • What is the difference between a dedicated server and colocation?

With Colocation, the customers provide their own server which we connect to our network. A dedicated server is one of our servers that is rented to a customer.

  • How can I request a BGP peering?

You can request a BGP peering here. You may want to review our customer BGP Policy here.

  • How much will a BGP peering cost me?

Nothing. Optic Fusion provides justifiable BGP peerings at no additional charge.

  • Does Optic Fusion provide technical support?

Technical support is available through our Network Operations Center (NOC). Most colocation packages include 1 hour per month of support. Additional support rates range between $85-$250 depending on skills required and the time the support service is required.

  • Does Optic Fusion have network redundancy?

Optic Fusion's network is designed to be fully redundant and diverse. We peer with multiple upstream carriers and utilize diverse fiber paths, terminating on diverse network devices.

  • What is a "U", or, more specifically, a "rack unit"?

As in 1U, 2U, 4U, etc. A "Rack Unit" or "U" is an Electronic Industries Alliance or more commonly "EIA" standard measuring unit for rack mount type equipment. This term has become more prevalent in recent times due to the proliferation of rack mount products showing up in a wide range of commercial, industrial and military markets. A "Rack Unit" is equal to 1.75" in height. To calculate the internal usable space of a rack enclosure you would simply multiply the total amount of Rack Units by 1.75". For example, a 44U rack enclosure would have 77" of internal usable space (44 x 1.75).

  • Authoritative Name Server Hosting

Optic Fusion provides authoritative name servers (ns1.opticfusion.net, ns2.opticfusion.net, and ns3.isofusion.com) for hosting your DNS zones. However, Optic Fusion recommends that you do not refer to these by name in your DNS zones. Instead, Optic Fusion strongly recommends that you generate ns.yourdomain.com A records, and point them the IP addresses assigned to the Optic Fusion name servers. This will provide diversity from the Optic Fusion zones.
